The press conference was presided over by Li Feng, deputy director of the Shanghai Museum.
At 4 p.m., the exhibition officially opened in the East Wing. The opening ceremony was attended by Japanese guests such as Murashi Suzuki, Chairman of the POLA Foundation for the Promotion of Fine Arts, Hiroko Noguchi, Director of the POLA Art Museum, Keiko Ito, Senior Executive Director of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, representatives of the Consulate General of Japan in Shanghai, Zhong Xiaomin, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Director of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, and Chu Xiaobo, Member of the Party Leadership Group of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism and Director of the Shanghai Museum. Hiroko Noguchi, Director of the Pola Museum of Art, said in her speech that in 2002, the Pola Museum of Art opened in Hakone with the concept of coexistence with nature, becoming the largest private art museum with the best quality, the largest collection and the largest scale in Japan in the 21st century. This exhibition showcases the best of the POLA Museum of Art's collection, and I sincerely hope that the passionate and wise works of these trend-setting artists will allow you to fully appreciate the POLA Museum's purpose of creating a "moving art museum".
Chu Xiaobo, a member of the Party Leadership Group of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism and director of the Shanghai Museum, said that 2025-2026 is the Year of Cultural Exchange between China, Japan and South Korea, and the exhibition is held at the right time. Japan is the center of the Asian collection of Impressionist paintings, and we are very honored to co-organize this exhibition with the Pola Museum of Art and the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, bringing the Impressionist and modern and contemporary art collections of the Pola Museum to China for the first time. This is not only an artistic exchange and collision between the East and the West, but also a wonderful presentation of the art collection dominated by the delicate taste of Asia.
Keiko Ito, senior executive director of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, said when talking about the cooperation between the two sides, as a reporting agency, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun began to support cultural undertakings in the 50s of the last century, and cultural exchanges with China began as early as 1958. In 2019, we co-hosted the "Tang Zhaoti Temple Jianzhen Cultural Relics and Dongshan Kaiyi Fan Painting Exhibition" with the Shanghai Museum. I believe that this exhibition will be a success in the cooperation with the Shanghai Museum.

With the theme of "Party", the exhibition is divided into six units, and a total of 69 works by 36 artists are displayed in the second and third special exhibition halls, respectively from the POLA Museum of Art in Japan, the National Art Museum of China, Liu Haisu Art Museum and Anhui Museum, covering representative works of Monet, Renoir, Czanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, to Matisse, Picasso and other Impressionist and Post-Impressionist representative works, especially presenting the creations of contemporary artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Yayoi Kusama, etc., involving a full range of famous artists and artistic genresThe time span is unprecedented. Professor Shen Yubing, Executive Dean of the Art Research Institute and Head of the Department of Philosophy of Art, Fudan University, commented on the exhibition: "The exhibition concept is very concise and clear. It tells the story of the rise, development, and lasting influence of Impressionism through the lens of East Asian aesthetics, providing the audience with a textbook journey through the universal appeal of Impressionism and its unique resonance in Asia.
The exhibition not only presents the visual and aesthetic preferences of Asians for Impressionist art, but also uses light, shadow and nature as clues to connect the profound significance of Impressionism to Fauvism, Cubism and contemporary art, and demonstrates the eternal creativity and innovative spirit of the artists. The exhibition hall adopts the design technique of blank space, integrates different styles of artworks in a simple space, uses the representative colors in the paintings as embellishments, and combines the changes of space blocks, so that the audience can focus on the works at the same time, but also feel the change of the genre of the painting through the switch of space.
In conjunction with this exhibition, Shangbo Cultural and Creative also developed around the classic elements of Monet, Renoir, Czanne, and Van Gogh art masters in the exhibition, and launched 62 cultural and creative products, covering canvas bags, plush toys, refrigerator magnets, notebooks, postcards, painting cores and other categories. Among them, the "Sugar Bowl, Pear and Tablecloth" series of plush toys draw inspiration from Czanne's still life paintings, and incorporate the design expression of cute and healing style, with delicate and soft textures, becoming an ideal choice for art lovers to carry around every day; In addition, there is a series of movable refrigerator magnets printed with master craftsmen, using different materials such as acrylic quicksand, wooden swivel, wooden door opening and metal slide rails, showing the unique charm of art and fun. Highlights of the exhibition
A complete panoramic perusal of Impressionism
As an open art museum, the Shanghai Museum has been exploring the artistic process of Impressionist painting with the audience for many years. Since 2013, he held the exhibition "From Barbizon to Impressionism", focusing on the beginning of Impressionist painting; In 2019, the exhibition "The Birth of Fine Arts" explores academic art, which has long been regarded as the antithesis of Impressionism in art history; and the 2023 exhibition "From Botticelli to Van Gogh", which presents how Impressionism is an important part of artistic transformation; This exhibition is the first panoramic view of Impressionism.
The first large-scale overseas exhibition at the Pola Art Museum
The POLA Museum is known for its rich collection of art from Impressionism to Modern. Based on the principle of "promoting the natural environment of Hakone with art", the POLA Museum of Art opened in 2002 in Sengokuhara, Hakone-cho, Kanagawa Prefecture, in Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The Pola Museum of Art's collection is one of the largest private collections in Japan in the second half of the 20th century, both in terms of quality and quantity. This exhibition is the most complete display of POLA Art Museum's collection overseas, showing the characteristics and charm of its collection to the greatest extent, and it is also a wonderful presentation of the art collection dominated by Asian delicate taste.
An art party where great masters gather
This exhibition brings together a number of wonderful works of European art giants, and sincerely presents a grand and enthusiastic art party for the audience. This glamorous "party list" includes Courbet, Corot, Manet, Monet, Sisley, Pissarro, Renoir, Czanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Matisse, Braque, Picasso, and more. The Asian art scene also includes famous artists such as Kiyoki Kuroda, Liu Haisu, Pan Yuliang, Yayoi Kusama, and Hiroshi Sugimoto.
Exchanges and dialogues across time and space
Another highlight of the "Impression Party" exhibition is to lead the audience into the artistic exchanges and dialogues that transcend time and space behind the Impressionism. When talking about the formation of the style of Impressionism, it is often impossible to ignore the influence of oriental art such as ukiyo-e. Western painting, represented by Impressionism, in turn, shaped the Asian art scene represented by China and Japan from the end of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. This exhibition also focuses on the reception and dissemination of Impressionist painting in Asia. In addition, today's art is still inspired by the great changes of Impressionism, and the exhibition will continue to showcase a number of important collections of contemporary art from the POLA Museum, continuing to lead the audience to appreciate the light and space in contemporary art.
